Used as an initiator for radical polymerization and in oxidation processes (e.g. Sharpless epoxidation); involved in osmium-catalyzed vicinal hydroxylation of olefins under alkaline conditions; used in catalytic asymmetric oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides (with binaphthol chiral auxiliary) and oxidation of dibenzothiophenes; introduces peroxy groups in organic synthesis.
